Unity Report Schools 2010-2011 school year

3rd Grade Parents and Guardians. I am so thrilled to start this year and work with the students in the third grade. I know there are wonderful things happening at the school and some of you would like your student to get into the swing of school. Some of you might have read about Unity and Maple Avenue, in Claremont, being awarded a grant to be used with technology in the classroom to help with Math. read more

The Parent Teacher group collaborated on writing grants that will provide the Art program with a kiln. Consulting support from a ceramics specialist through NH Council on the Arts will help the school implement this program.

Unity Elementary School has been the beneficiary of several large "anonymous" contributions to enhance the library, technology infrastructure, and playground.

The Kiwanis Club continues to be an active partner in supporting school with playground work days, financial contributions, and most importantly, K-kids, which meet two times/month.

There have been several changes in Unity's technology over the summer. The library was moved, and new desktop computers have been purchased.

A countertop has been installed in the Science room as a mini computer lab station. The Science teacher has performed maintenance on old computers, and memory has been added to increase their performance. Volunteer hours have been spent repairing computers for the opening of school, so teachers would be ready for Power School (a student information data base system) implementation.

Grades 5-8 students are taking an assessment to determine the students’ instructional levels and measure academic growth throughout the year. MAP tests are unique in that they adapt to the student’s individual level of learning. Unity Elementary School is excited to begin a new era that focuses on every student’s individual growth and achievement.

The School Board in November 2006 established a Facilities Committee to help address a primary goal. Volunteers were tapped to serve on the committee and have been meeting monthly since.

The Town of Unity has taken a great amount of pride in the restoration of an old stage route tavern into a modern building with offices and library, the care and preservation of a beautiful town hall, and the support of excellent facilities for the town’s volunteer fire/rescue operations, and highways. The school will continue to focus on this same pride and momentum.

The after-school program has had a slow start, but is beginning to increase in participation. Unity’s enrollment of 118 students serves families where both parents work outside of the community. Many students go home to empty houses or are cared for by older siblings.

The school has worked with PlusTime NH on a startup grant for an after-school program. The school has received a check for $6,000 from Plus Time. UES is now a "Licensed After-School Program", eligible for additional streams of funding.

The success of the program will be based upon having a dynamic option for working parents to keep their children in a quality after-school program that runs 5 days/week until 6PM. Eligible families can access grant funds for their kids to participate (Medicaid eligible) and fees will be established for "full pay" kids.

This program will be completely self supporting through grants and fees. The school's only contribution (besides supplying the students) will be in-kind, including the use of the library, cafeteria, a classroom, and computers.

The Unity School District is a busy, forward-thinking place.
